WITS Organizational Guiding Principles
Walking With Our Ancestors Toward Liberation, Healing, and Transformation
At The Westchester Institute for Transformative Support (WITS), our work is guided by the belief that healing is both personal and collective. We recognize that individuals, families, and communities carry stories of resilience, survival, wisdom, and strength. We honor the teachings of our ancestors and walk with them as we create pathways toward liberation, restoration, and collective wellness.
We Believe…
We believe healing is a birthright.
We believe every person has the inherent capacity to heal, grow, and transform. Healing is not something that must be earned; it is something we support people in remembering through connection, safety, and belonging.
We believe our ancestors walk with us.
We believe the wisdom, resilience, traditions, and teachings of those who came before us continue to guide our work. We honor ancestral knowledge as a source of strength and recognize that healing generations before us helps create liberation for generations after us.
We believe liberation begins with remembering who we are.
We believe systems of oppression, violence, and disconnection can separate people from their identity, culture, community, and inner wisdom. Our work supports individuals in reconnecting with their strengths, values, purpose, and belonging.
We believe people are more than the harm they have caused.
We believe accountability and transformation can exist together. We hold individuals responsible for harmful behaviors while recognizing their capacity to learn, repair, and create a different future.
We believe accountability is an act of love and responsibility.
We believe true healing requires honesty, ownership, and a willingness to repair harm. Accountability is not punishment; it is the pathway toward healthier relationships, safer communities, and collective healing.
We believe communities heal together.
We believe healing does not happen in isolation. Our wellness is connected to the wellness of our families, communities, ancestors, and future generations. We honor collective care, mutual support, and the power of coming together.
We believe culture is medicine.
We believe culture, tradition, language, spirituality, storytelling, movement, ceremony, and connection to the land are powerful sources of healing and resilience. We honor Indigenous wisdom and cultural practices that support restoration and belonging.
We believe the body carries wisdom.
We believe trauma impacts the mind, body, spirit, and relationships. We support approaches that help individuals reconnect with their bodies, regulate their nervous systems, and restore a sense of safety and wholeness.
We believe every person deserves dignity and respect.
We believe every individual has inherent worth regardless of their history, circumstances, or challenges. We create spaces where people are seen, heard, valued, and supported.
We believe relationships are the foundation of healing.
We believe transformation happens through safe, authentic, and respectful relationships. Connection, trust, and belonging are essential pathways to individual and collective wellness.
We believe Indigenous wisdom teaches us to think beyond ourselves.
We believe we are responsible not only for ourselves today, but for the generations that follow. Our choices create the world our children and grandchildren will inherit.
We believe the land holds teachings.
We believe connection to the natural world reminds us of balance, reciprocity, and interconnectedness. Like the earth, we are constantly growing, changing, shedding, and renewing.
We believe resilience is passed through generations.
We believe our communities carry deep knowledge and strength that have survived hardship, displacement, oppression, and trauma. We honor the resilience that has carried people forward and use it as a foundation for transformation.
We believe every voice matters.
We believe lived experience is a form of knowledge. We honor the voices of survivors, community members, participants, elders, youth, and those with lived experience as essential partners in creating change.
We believe restoration is possible.
We believe individuals, families, and communities can repair relationships, rebuild trust, and create new patterns. Restoration requires courage, compassion, accountability, and commitment.
We believe transformation requires both roots and vision.
We believe our roots connect us to our ancestors, our culture, and our history. Our vision guides us toward a future built on safety, justice, connection, and liberation.
