Circles of Restoration™
At the Westchester Institute for Transformative Support (WITS), we believe that healing happens in relationship—with ourselves, our families, our communities, the natural world, and the values that give our lives meaning. Circles of Restoration™ is WITS’ signature restorative practice model, inspired by Taíno values of reciprocity, collective responsibility, respect, and harmony, while integrating contemporary research in trauma recovery, restorative justice, neuroscience, and resilience. Rather than focusing solely on problems or symptoms, Circles of Restoration invites participants to reconnect with their strengths, explore accountability with compassion, and build the skills needed to create healthier relationships and stronger communities.
Unlike traditional support groups or classroom-based learning, Circles of Restoration creates a shared space where every participant has the opportunity to be seen, heard, and valued. Guided by trained facilitators, participants engage in structured dialogue, reflective exercises, mindfulness, storytelling, somatic practices, and experiential activities that encourage self-awareness, empathy, and personal growth. The circle format fosters trust, reduces isolation, and promotes meaningful connection while honoring that every individual’s voice carries equal importance within the community.
At the heart of the model is the understanding that transformation is not achieved through punishment alone but through accountability, reflection, connection, and practice. Participants are encouraged to examine how their experiences, beliefs, emotions, and choices influence their relationships and the lives of those around them. Whether someone is working to rebuild trust, strengthen parenting skills, recover from trauma, navigate life transitions, or develop healthier patterns of communication, Circles of Restoration provides a supportive framework for lasting change rooted in dignity and responsibility.
The WITS Circle of Restoration is organized around five interconnected areas of well-being that reflect our holistic approach to healing:
- Self – Developing self-awareness, emotional regulation, accountability, identity, and resilience.
- Relationships – Strengthening healthy communication, trust, empathy, boundaries, and repair.
- Community – Building belonging, mutual support, collective responsibility, and meaningful contribution.
- Nature – Reconnecting with the body, the natural world, mindfulness, movement, and the restorative power of the environment.
- Spirit & Purpose – Exploring personal values, cultural identity, gratitude, hope, meaning, and connection to something greater than oneself.
Because every journey is unique, Circles of Restoration can be adapted to serve a wide range of populations, including survivors of intimate partner violence, individuals participating in restorative or accountability programs, parents and caregivers, youth and young adults, professionals experiencing compassion fatigue, community organizations, and teams seeking to strengthen collaboration and wellness. Each circle is intentionally designed to meet participants where they are while fostering growth that extends beyond the circle into families, workplaces, and neighborhoods.
At WITS, we understand restoration not as returning to who we were before adversity, but as intentionally becoming who we are capable of being. Through Circles of Restoration™, participants are invited to reclaim their voice, strengthen their relationships, deepen their connection to community, and move forward with greater purpose, balance, and hope. We believe that when individuals heal, families grow stronger, communities become more connected, and lasting transformation becomes possible.
