The Wisdom We Carry
Why WITS Does What We Do
Understanding Our Work Through Healing, Liberation, and Restoration
At The Westchester Institute for Transformative Support (WITS), we recognize that healing cannot happen without understanding the experiences, systems, and histories that have shaped our communities.
Our work begins with the understanding that many of the challenges individuals, families, and communities face today are connected to generations of disruption, disconnection, and harm. To understand where we are, we must honor where we have been.
For many Indigenous communities and communities impacted by colonization, the impacts of historical trauma continue to be felt through loss of culture, separation from land, disruption of family systems, and the erosion of traditional healing practices and community structures.
Colonization created systems that disrupted the relationships people had with themselves, each other, their communities, and the natural world. Many Indigenous ways of knowing emphasized balance, reciprocity, collective responsibility, connection to the land, and the belief that healing occurs within relationships. These teachings were often suppressed, displaced, or devalued.
The effects of these disruptions continue through generations.
The Legacy of Disconnection
WITS recognizes that many forms of harm we see today — including violence, trauma, family disruption, isolation, and loss of connection — do not exist in isolation. They are connected to broader histories of oppression, inequality, and systems that have often separated people from their sources of strength and belonging.
When communities experience generations of:
- Forced separation from culture and traditions
- Loss of connection to land and community
- Systems that create inequality and exclusion
- Intergenerational trauma
- Limited access to healing resources
- Messages that devalue identity and lived experience
the impacts can affect how individuals understand themselves, relationships, safety, and belonging.
WITS does not view individuals as broken. We recognize that many people have adapted to survive within systems and environments that have not always supported their healing.
Why Healing Matters
WITS exists because we believe people and communities have the ability to heal, transform, and reconnect with their inherent wisdom.
Healing requires more than addressing symptoms. It requires understanding the roots of harm and creating pathways back to connection.
We believe healing happens when people are supported in reconnecting with:
- Their identity
- Their culture
- Their bodies
- Their relationships
- Their communities
- Their purpose
- Their ancestral wisdom
At WITS, we honor the knowledge that has survived despite generations of hardship. We believe our ancestors carried resilience, teachings, and wisdom that continue to guide us toward restoration.
Why WITS Focuses on Transformation
Many systems focus only on what is wrong with individuals. WITS believes we must also understand what has happened to individuals, families, and communities.
This does not remove responsibility from individuals who cause harm. Accountability remains essential.
However, we believe true transformation requires both:
Accountability for the harm that has occurred
and
Understanding of the experiences and systems that shape behavior.
We create spaces where individuals can face their choices honestly while also developing the skills, awareness, and support needed to create change.
Returning to Connection
At the heart of WITS’ work is a return to connection.
Many Indigenous teachings remind us that we are not separate from one another. We are connected to our ancestors, our families, our communities, and the earth.
Healing is not only about becoming better as individuals. Healing is about restoring balance within ourselves and our relationships.
WITS believes that:
- Connection is healing
- Culture is healing
- Community is healing
- Accountability is healing
Remembering who we are is healing
Walking With Our Ancestors Toward the Future
WITS walks with our ancestors as our guide.
We honor those who came before us — those who carried wisdom, protected traditions, survived hardship, and created pathways for future generations.
We recognize that we are not beginning this work from nothing. We are continuing a long journey of resilience, restoration, and transformation.
Our responsibility is to take what was carried forward, honor what was lost, repair what has been harmed, and create something healthier for those who come after us.
Why WITS Exists
WITS exists because we believe healing is possible.
We exist to support individuals, families, and communities in breaking cycles of harm, reconnecting with their strengths, and creating new pathways forward.
We exist because people deserve more than survival.
They deserve belonging.
They deserve connection.
They deserve the opportunity to heal and thrive.
Our work is rooted in the belief that when we heal individuals, we strengthen families. When we strengthen families, we strengthen communities. When communities heal, future generations inherit something different.
At WITS, we walk the path of transformation together — guided by ancestral wisdom, grounded in accountability, and committed to liberation, healing, and collective wellness.
