The Regulated Reader
Reading for Healing. Reflecting for Growth. Regulating Together.
Healing begins with understanding, and some of the most powerful transformations start with a single story. The Regulated Reader is WITS’ monthly community reading circle designed to explore books that deepen our understanding of trauma, nervous system regulation, resilience, relationships, identity, and personal growth. Hosted by the Westchester Institute for Transformative Support (WITS), this nonprofit-led program brings people together to learn, reflect, and build meaningful connections through shared reading and conversation.
Each month, participants explore a carefully selected book that blends science, storytelling, and practical strategies for healing. Guided by experienced facilitators, discussions go beyond the pages to examine how trauma shapes our minds and bodies, how our nervous systems influence the way we experience the world, and how knowledge can become a pathway toward greater regulation, resilience, and well-being. Together, we connect research with lived experience, creating a supportive environment where curiosity, compassion, and personal growth are encouraged.
Featured books may include:
- The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk
- The Tell by Amy Griffin
- What Happened to You? by Bruce D. Perry and Oprah Winfrey
- My Grandmother’s Hands by Resmaa Menakem
- The Myth of Normal by Gabor Maté
- No Bad Parts by Richard C. Schwartz
- Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown
- And many more books exploring trauma, neuroscience, healing, relationships, culture, and emotional well-being.
The Regulated Reader meets once each month, with both in-person and virtual participation options so individuals throughout Westchester County and beyond can join wherever they are. Whether you attend from home or gather with us in person, you’ll become part of a welcoming community committed to lifelong learning, authentic conversation, and collective healing.
At WITS, we believe that learning can be a form of regulation. As we better understand ourselves, our brains, and our nervous systems, we become more equipped to respond with intention rather than react from survival. Through thoughtful books, meaningful dialogue, and supportive community, The Regulated Reader helps participants cultivate insight, connection, and practical tools that can be carried into everyday life.
Come read with us. Regulate with us. Grow with us.
