WITS Organizational Beliefs and Commitments
Walking With Our Ancestors Toward Healing, Liberation, and Transformation
At The Westchester Institute for Transformative Support (WITS), our work is rooted in the belief that healing is both an individual and collective journey. We recognize that every person carries a story shaped by their experiences, relationships, culture, community, and ancestors.
We believe transformation occurs when individuals are supported with compassion, accountability, connection, and opportunities to reclaim their power. Our work honors Indigenous teachings of interconnectedness, reciprocity, respect for all living beings, and responsibility to future generations.
WITS is committed to creating spaces where individuals, families, and communities can heal from trauma, transform harmful patterns, restore relationships, and move toward greater safety, wellness, and liberation.
Our Organizational Beliefs
We believe healing is possible.
We believe every person has the capacity for growth, change, and transformation. We recognize that people are not defined only by their struggles, their trauma, or the harm they have caused. With accountability, support, and intentional work, individuals can develop new ways of being, relating, and contributing to their communities.
We believe healing begins with remembering.
We believe many individuals and communities carry wisdom, resilience, and teachings passed down through generations. We honor the knowledge of our ancestors and recognize that healing often requires reconnecting with identity, culture, community, and purpose.
We walk with our ancestors as our guide — honoring where we come from while creating a more just, connected, and healthy future for generations to come.
We believe liberation requires reclaiming power.
We believe many people have experienced systems, relationships, and environments that have disconnected them from their voice, identity, safety, and sense of belonging.
Our work supports individuals in reclaiming:
- Their voice
- Their choices
- Their cultural identity
- Their relationships
- Their ability to create change
Liberation means moving beyond survival and creating opportunities to thrive.
We believe accountability and compassion belong together.
We believe compassion does not mean avoiding accountability, and accountability does not require shame.
We believe meaningful change happens when people are supported in honestly examining their choices, understanding their impact, repairing harm, and building healthier ways of relating to others.
We believe culture is a source of healing.
We believe culture, ancestry, spirituality, storytelling, language, traditions, and connection to community are powerful sources of strength and resilience.
WITS honors Indigenous-informed approaches that recognize healing as connected to the mind, body, spirit, relationships, and the natural world.
We believe the body holds wisdom.
We believe trauma affects the whole person. Healing requires attention to emotional, physical, relational, and spiritual wellness.
We incorporate approaches that support nervous system regulation, self-awareness, embodiment, and reconnection with oneself.
We believe relationships are the foundation of transformation.
We believe people heal through safe, respectful, and authentic relationships.
We strive to create environments where people experience:
- Belonging
- Trust
- Respect
- Dignity
- Mutual accountability
- Connection
We believe lived experience is expertise.
We believe knowledge comes not only from education and professional training, but also from personal experience, cultural knowledge, community wisdom, and survival.
We honor the voices of survivors, community members, participants, elders, youth, and individuals with lived experience as valuable sources of knowledge and leadership.
We believe communities are stronger when everyone belongs.
We believe healing and transformation require communities where all people are valued and supported.
We are committed to creating accessible, inclusive, and culturally responsive spaces where individuals feel seen, respected, and empowered.
We believe our responsibility extends beyond today.
We believe we are accountable to future generations.
Our work asks:
“What are we creating for those who come after us?”
We strive to build healthier families, safer communities, and stronger systems that honor the dignity of all people.
